So you want to start practicing witchcraft but don’t know where to begin? I will say the best way to begin anything is with a clear head and some research. I will try to list and link some of my favorite sites, books, witches, creators etc. in one big post later on. But in all a general knowledge start is a good place to begin.
I started on my journey when; for a sequence of moments of a week or so, I was randomly seeing flashing or flickering images of snakes constantly in my head and I could not make sense of it. One night after waking up at 4am to go to the bathroom I was having images of snakes coming out of my toilet and I was at the point where I was getting frustrated at the idea that I could not stop getting these thoughts or images out of my head so I started googling the significance of seeing snakes. “Transformation,” “Renewal”, and “Healing” is what is given. And then something in my head said witchcraft and clicked really hard in my head, like the biggest lightbulb in my head went off and something in my bones felt like in that moment it all made sense.
At the time I was already slowly peacing my spiritual journey together. Going to therapy. Working on meditation for my mental health, and doing yoga daily to help with my physical health issues but I didn’t feel like at the time I was going anywhere with it. Until that morning of realization. But at the time I also never expected it to lead me to where I am now. And at some point I will give the full lay down on my lore or backstory of my life in a later post. But anyways….
Going down the spiritual path of practicing witchcraft, magic, becoming a devotee to a God or Goddess is an amazing experience but it does take time, learning, patience, and my biggest key to any successful spiritual path is SHADOW WORK. Root work. Working on yourself, your mental health. You cannot be successful if you don’t do your shadow work. A lot of new practitioners don’t understand how important it really is. Especially when beginning.
Another idea to keep in mind is you do not need anything except yourself to start practicing magic. Everyone thinks you need all the crystals and herbs and tools to be start or to be successful but none of that stuff works unless you put the energy and momentum into those tools to work. (A hammer doesn’t just hammer things by itself, you have to physically pick it up and put the force of energy down into the hammer for it to work.)
When I first started I was definitely one of those people who bought all crystals I could buy, all the intense, pendulums, etc. and now after 6 years I definitely barely use any of it unless I’m doing specific work or prepping one of my alters. All the crystals and tools are great believe me they are all beautiful and they all work if you put the energy into them BUT do not worry if you cannot obtain them because they are not always necessary.
Some things I think people should research though, to start are the following:
-THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS ( I only say this because I want people to understand the actual concept of what this actually was and the outcome of what mis information can do because although this was something taught in school, the concept of the killings and who was being killed was not really taught at least I don’t think correctly. ) And I have met many people especially witches who have a whole different idea of what this part of history was about.
-HISTORY OF WITCHES/ WITCHCRAFT
-SHADOW WORK!!!!!!** & GROUNDING
-DIFFERENT KINDS AND TYPES OF WITCHCRAFT/ PRACTICES/ UNDERSTANDING CULTURAL PRACTICES (Knowing what you should or should not practice so you do not cultural appropriate)
-FIRE SAFETY WITHIN WITCHCRAFT OR FIRE SAFETY IN GENERAL
-CANDLE MAGICK, CORRESPONDENTS OF COLORS, SEASONS, HERBS
-MAGICAL TOOLS AND USES
-LUNAR AND SOLAR ENERGIES (THE MOON & SUN)
There is so much to learn and these are just SOME of the subjects you should begin with if you are new to practicing. The learning is never ending. Not one person can say they know everything about witchcraft because the learning is never ending. I will say it again, THE LEARNING IS NEVER ENDING. There is always something new to learn. But you should only use what resonates with you, don’t feel like you have to practice everything you learn, it is just good knowledge to know and it all can be overwhelming so don’t feel like you have to do it all.
With all that I will also list some of the books I would suggest to start reading if you can gain access to them. This also is in no specific order.
• Physic Witch by Mat Auryn
• Spirit of the Witch by Raven Grimassi
• Wild Magic by Danu Forest
• The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and Janet Mills
I will probably come back to updating this or just making a new post with more information to break up some of this information because it can be a lot. I hope you all have enjoyed reading and I hope this may help someone just starting out.
Now I know what some people will be criticizing me about how I came onto my path but I would say anyone could have an eye opening experience to almost anything. This was just mine.
Blessed be.
